Cingular Wireless LLC is the largest mobile phone company in the US and has over fifty-seven million monthly subscribers. Cingular also reported the fewest number of dropped calls, and has the ever-popular”Rollover” feature, which allows Cingular users to rollover unused minutes into their next month of service.

With 57 million people using Cingular’s mobile phones, the phones themselves have the ability to play ringtones to distinguish one cell phone to the next. Cingular also has a list of Spanish voice tones and alerts.  Some of them use generic voices saying and doing various things, while others are sound clips from movies and comedy routines. These also cost $2.49 per download, with no extra fees and no expiration.

Sound effect tones are generally very simple, and often shorter than most ring tones, usually only a few seconds each. The sound effects from Cingular are everything from barking dogs to the yelling of the  Ewoks from Star Wars. They are generally humorous, unique, or annoying enough to make the cell phone owner answer their phone within a small amount of rings. They are often the least-used ring tone and the best in terms of differentiating rings when in a room full of cellphones. These sound effect ring tones cost only a single fee of $1.99 and never expire.

Cingular’s polyphonic ringtones are similar to music tones in that they are musical in nature, but they are not authentic clips from popular music. Instead, they are remade using a computer, and do not include vocals. They are also able to be used on even the oldest of cell phones, as they do not require specially designed speakers to be able to play the tunes. Basically, any music tone most likely has a polyphonic equivalent if a particular cell phone cannot play the music tone itself. Just like the previously mentioned ringtones, they never expire, and they cost only $1.99 per download.

For the Cingular subscriber who spends a good amount of money on ring tones each month, joining the Cingular Sounds Tone Club is a good idea. For $5.99 a month, subscribers get 3 downloads of either music tones or polyphonic ring tones, which works out to about a 20% savings. Or for $9.99 a month, it is possible to save 30% on ring tones because subscribers can download 6 music tones or 6 polyphonic ring tones.

So even with 57 million subscribers under Cingular’s cell phone plans, there is no reason everyone needs to have the same ring tone alerting them to their next call. For those who use Cingular, there are many options to what noises are coming out of their mobile phones, whether it is a song, a noise, a voice, or any number of things. With their reasonable prices, any Cingular user can probably afford to personalize their cell phones, even just a little bit.
