As of June 2006, Nokia Corporation is listed as the largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world, with around 34% of the cell phone market being provided by Nokia. The company was started in 1865 as a pulp mill in Finland, on the banks of the Nokianvirta, near the town of Nokia. In the early 1900s, Finnish Rubber Works chose to use “Nokia” as its brand name. After the end of World War I, the Finnish Rubber Works bought both the Nokia Wood Mills and Finnish Cable Works. The three became the Nokia Corporation in 1967, and are now the largest company in Finland.
In the beginning, the Nokia Corporation had its hand in the manufacturing of several different products, including footwear, bicycle and car tires, paper products, televisions, personal computers, and various types of communications cables. With the production of these cables, Nokia began branching out into the telecommunications field during the 1970s.
Nokia’s first telecommunications product was a switch for telephone exchanges known as the Nokia DX200. And in 1972, Nokia produced a mobile phone-type field radio commissioned by the Finnish Defense Forces. Then in 1987, Nokia released the world’s first phone to fall under the Nordic Mobile Telephone network standard. It was called the Nokia Cityman.
Since then, Nokia has done moderately well for itself with a few bumps along the way. Right now, there is a plan in the works to merge Nokia’s Network Business Group with Siemens AG’s COM Division to potentially become the largest company making equipment for telecommunication in the world.
Prior to the merger, which should happen by December 2006, Nokia has done quite well for itself in the mobile phone business. Nokia sold over 15 million mp3-enabled camera phones in the first quarter of 2006 alone. Not only is Nokia considered the world’s biggest manufacturer of mobile phones, but that places them very high on the list of digital camera manufacturers, not to mention the outselling of Apple’s iPods.
With a company this intense about being the best manufacturer of mobile phones, it is safe to say that Nokia is sure to add as many popular features to a large portion of their mobile phones and still attempt to keep the prices manageable, with a good number of their cell phones being under $100 — sometimes even free — when bought with a cell phone plan. These lower prices still include camera phones, mp3-playability, and, with every cell phone, the ability to play ring tones.
Even some of the earliest of Nokia phones had ringtone capability, though downloading them was not a large of an option. Nokia developed something called Nokring, which was also known as RTTTL. RTTTL stands for “ringing tones text transfer language,” and is helpful in composing one’s own ring tones from scratch.
There are many places on the internet that have written out instructions on how to make simple music clips using the Composer that comes with most Nokia phones. By inputting the data with the mobile phone’s keypad, it is possible to have a ring tone and not have to pay for it or spend time figuring out the best way to transfer it to the cell phone from the computer, and things of that nature. By using Composer, it is placed directly inside the phone, as Composer is right there on the phone already. The only time a computer may be involved is when song clip data is looked up so the guess work is minimal for the owner of the cell phone.
The downside to RTTTL ring tones is that they can only play one note at a time, unlike polyphonic ring tones which are capable of handling multiple notes at one time, thereby providing a richer, fuller musical experience that sounds closer to actual instruments. RTTTL also lacks the ability to use more than one tone-sound, whereas polyphonic tones can simulate a large number of instruments.
If the idea of RTTTL ring tones is not appealing, it is possible to find many other websites with free and pay ring tones of the polyphonic and real music variety. As of this writing, the Nokia website’s ring tone pages are under construction and it is advised to look at the websites for the cell phone plan providers instead.
