n the world today, or at least the United States, people use cell phones more often than land-line telephones. And with so many people carrying mobile phones around throughout their day, it is important for many people to find distinguishing ring tones so as to easily differentiate an incoming call on their phone from other cell phones in the room.

Thankfully, there are many kinds of ring tones, with many different qualities, and it is even possible with the right equipment to create your own. But not all cell phones are able to handle all forms of ring tones, depending on the age of the phone itself and the technology on hand at the time of its creation. Sometimes cell phones are purposely made with less-impressive technology as a way of cutting costs.

Even in the case of older cell phones or low-cost cell phones, it is possible to find many distinctive ring tones that are of good quality, though not as good as the newer, high-end cell phones. The best kinds of ring tone out there for cell phones, without all of the fancy bells and whistles are the polyphonic ring tones.

While newer cell phones can play real clips of real music — some of which can be mp3s found on a person’s computer — polyphonic ring tones can play synthesized instrumental versions of those songs and take up less space in the process. Unlike other types of ring tone, polyphonic does not have any voice added to it, and is made entirely with the use of a computer.

The word polyphonic generally describes the ability of an instrument to be able to play more than one note or tone at a time. (For example, a piano would be considered polyphonic, where a flute would not.) The word also applies to electronic instruments, which can be sequenced to play multiple notes at the same time, like a computer- based orchestra.

This sequencing of notes done on a computer is sometimes done using a protocol known as MIDI — musical instrumental digital interface.  With MIDI, it is possible to emulate the sounds of several different real instruments without needing to know how to actually play each one. All that is required is knowledge of musical notation, though it is also possible to find keyboards that will connect to a personal computer and save the music played into a midi format readable by various applications.

Due to the simplicity of MIDI technology and the fact that is has been widely used since the 1980s; polyphonic ring tones are a popular feature on even older cell phones. They require less complex speaker capabilities than cell phones that play clips of actual songs, and tend to be significantly smaller in size, which is perfect for a cell phone with only a megabyte or so of storage space.

Because of the hands-on approach that can be taken with polyphonic ringtones, it means there are a large number of user-created versions of large quantities of songs turned into cell phone readable forms.  These can be found on the websites run by various mobile phone services, as well as free and pay websites that will allow cell phone downloads often by way of text messaging a cell phone with a link to the ring tone itself.
This is both good and bad: the quality on most pay sites is often better, as the polyphonic ring tones are being paid for, while free sites get their content from users who sequence the files themselves.  As with any musician, everyone has their own style and flare, and occasionally this will be reflected in a ring tone one makes of someone else’s song.

When looking for a ring tone of a specific song, it is often a good idea to listen to the entire thing if possible, especially on a pay site. Because of the differences in playback depending on who sequenced the file, it may not be a satisfactory representation of a well-liked song. Just as anything in this world, it is hard to please everyone given differences in taste and style.

But for those cell phone users looking to spruce up their cell phone and change their ring tone to something pleasant and different, polyphonic ring tones can be the answer almost anyone could be looking for. The best part is, polyphonic ringtones do not require special equipment or features, and are guaranteed to work on even the cell phones that are free with a new plan.
