With very little effort and a few minutes of access to a search engine, anyone can find thousands of websites hosting a wide variety of ring tones. Some of them are free, some of them cost money. Some are real music tones, some are polyphonic. Whether someone is looking for a little rock, pop, hip-hop, maybe something funny, crazy, or even a little disgusting, there are downloads everywhere.
But what about ring tones of songs that are lesser known by an artist that might not be topping the charts right now — or really, at any time in the past? How does a fan of an independently-labeled artist show their support by downloading a ring tone to their cell phone if no one else has made a ring tone for it? What about someone who is a musician themselves who wants to play their favorite song on their cell phone any time one of their other band mates gives them a call?
The answer is relatively simple: that fan or that musician can find the way to make that ring tone on their own.
It is possible to use particular pieces of hardware connected to a computer to actually play a tune that will then be turned into a polyphonic ring tone that may or may not be something worth using as an incoming call alert. But there are plenty of other ways — easier ways — to do the same thing without requiring the same kind of hardware.
The websites might not be as prevalent as those with already made ring tones, but it is possible to find all manner of ring tone composers online: some involve a download, while others work through a website or even the cell phone itself. Some are free, and others cost ten dollars or more depending on the capabilities of the applications and the ease of use for users without much musical ability. Regardless, ring tone composers are the key to anyone looking to make a very specific tone that is not available for download anywhere else.
A good number of these ringtone composers will save polyphonic ring tones in a MIDI format, which a large variety of cell phones are capable of reading. Another file format used is called RTTTL, or”Ringing tones text transfer language.” This works by turning the music into a code a cell phone can understand when the code is placed onto the cell phone.
With polyphonic ring tones, it is required (in most cases) that the user create the ring tone from scratch, using some form of musical notation. This can be tricky for those who do not know music very well, but can be just fine if the user has their hands on sheet music or something along those lines.
There are other ring tone composers that work with real music, where an mp3 file or similar is inserted into the program, and is then shortened to be under 25 seconds or so, and is then saved in a file that can be read by the cell phone. Because not all cell phones use the same file formatting system, it is vitally important to understand what can and cannot be used for a given cell phone, or else there will be a lot of frustration involved in a relatively straight-forward process.
After the ring tone is made, it must be sent to the cell phone before it can be set as an alert and used for incoming calls. This requires either computer-to-cell phone cables, a way to send the song by way of a text message to the phone, or a website to house the file that is easy for a web-enabled cell phone to access. Once the tone is placed on the cell phone, it can be located on the phone itself and then set to go off when an incoming call comes in, or perhaps only when a certain person calls.
Sure, creating a ringtone from scratch can be difficult, but it might not be as hard as it seems if the proper ring tone composer application is found. Using search engines and listing any features required to make the application worthwhile should help narrow down the results. And then, all that will be left is installation and the creation of that ring tone. With a little free time and some creative desire, not to mention the right ring tone composer, it isn’t very difficult to do at all.
